In the 1600’s, many people believed that living things could emerge from nonliving matter. This thought was known as spontaneous generation. For example, people believed that worms emerged from dirt and that maggots emerged from rotting meat. Francesco Redi was an Italian scientist at the time and employed the scientific method to disprove the notion of spontaneous generation. He did so using three experimental set-ups:
- A piece of rotting meat was placed in an open container and he observed flies laying eggs on the meat and later maggots emerging.
- A piece of rotting meat was placed in a air-tight sealed container and no flies or maggots were observed.
- A piece of rotting meat was placed in a container that was “sealed” with mesh and flies and maggots were observed on the mesh but not the meat.
After revealing the results from the first two experimental set-ups, people were still not convinced that maggots were the result of the eggs laid by the flies. They noted that living things need fresh air and oxygen to survive and by sealing the second container obviously nothing living could emerge. This lead Redi to the third experimental set-up. This third set-up allowed air to flow into the container but prevented the flies from contacting the meat.
