CHRONIC INFLAMATION ANEMIA
Chronic inflammation anemia refers to having low levels of red blood cells as a result of autoimmune diseases or other chronic illnesses. Chronic diseases are those diseases that last longer than 3 months. Chronic diseases may cause changes in red blood cells that can cause red blood cells to die sooner and slow down in production. During anemia of chronic disease, the iron that is normally recycled from old red blood cells to help make new red blood cells is retained within macrophages, which then limits the amount of iron available to help create new red blood cells (Cleveland Clinic, 2018).
Both iron deficiency anemia and chronic inflammation anemia have similar symptoms including: feeling tired or weak, having pale skin, having shortness of breath, sweating, being dizzy or feeling faint, rapid heartbeat, and or having headaches. These two diseases are based on disturbances of iron homeostasis and may be helped or in some cases prevented by making some changes in the diet. Patients should be sure to get enough iron, folate, and vitamin B-12 by eating foods like chicken, turkey, beans, spinach, and enriched breads (Cleveland Clinic, 2018).
When discussing iron deficiency anemia, patient factors can play a large role in development. Certain populations including individuals living in poverty, women of childbearing age, and children are all at high risk for developing IDA. In countries where little meat is in the diet, iron deficiency anemia is 6-8 timers more prevalent that in North America and Europe. When looking at the difference between males and females, during childbearing years, adult females loses about twice that of iron compared to a male on a daily basis. Race does not seem to have a significant effect on the occurrence of anemia, but diet and socioeconomic factors do play a role in the prevalence of IDA (Harper, 2019).
When looking at chronic inflammation anemia, this type of anemia can affect people at any age, but is more likely to affect older adults as they are more likely to have chronic disease that cause inflammation. Other diseases significant in causing inflammation leading to chronic inflammation anemia include: diabetes, heart failure, and chronic kidney disease. All of these diseases may be affected greater in some races, due to behavior, and also as resultants of different genetics (Celeveland Clinic, 2018).
