Chapter 11 Deals with Politics and the Economy. While these are technically two seperate institutions, they are quite intertwined.
Authority refers to the legitimate use of power, while coercion is viewed as the unjust, illegitimate use of power. The state is a political entity that claims a monopoly on the use of violence over a particular territory. Max Weber identified three types of authority– traditional, rational-legal, and charismatic. The orderly transfer of authority at the death, resignation, or incapacitation of a leader is critical for social stability.
In the United States, with its winner-takes-all electoral system, the two main political parties must appeal to the center, and minority parties make little headway. The more people feel they have a stake in the political system, the more likely they are to vote.
Functionalists and conflict theorists have very different views on who rules the United States. According to the functionalists, no one group holds power; instead, competing interest groups balance one another (pluralism). According to conflict theorists, the United States is governed by a ruling class composed of members drawn from the elite (power elite). The two major economic systems are capitalism, in which the means of production are privately owned, and socialism, in which the means of production are state owned. In recent years, each of these systems has adopted features of the other.
