Student text:Diglossia is a situation whereas two types of varieties of a language are spoken within thesame speech community. A key defining characteristic of diglossia is that the two varieties arekept quite apart in their functions. (Wardhaugh; 89) The function of the two varieties can bedescribed as a low- or high variety. The low variety is the type of language that you are beinglearned as a child and is used in the everyday life whereas the high variety only can be taught inschool and is used as a more formal language. These two varieties also function as a socialdistinction in the society. The low variety is the mother tongue, used by everyone in the daily lifeand has no strict standards concerning grammar which makes it seen as a less valued language.Meanwhile the high variety is a formal language only used by the well-educated and is only used inspecific formal contexts that demands complex grammar which makes it seen as a high valuedlanguage. The use of diglossia is caused by both individual and situational factors. The high varietyis only being used in specific contexts and situations whereas a formal and strict language isrequired. It can also serve as a tool for an individual to feel superior towards others since the usersof the high variety most often are ranked higher in the hierarchical system.
