 Metacognition helps you to be a self-aware problem solver and take control of your learning. By using metacognition when I study, I can be strategic about my approach. One learning strategy that will work for me is "thinking outloud."  It is important to talk through the material. Verbalizing thoughts can help me make more sense of the material and internalize it more deeply (Centre for Innovation, 2016). Talking aloud is a great way to test yourself on how well you really know the material. In courses that require problem solving, explaining the steps aloud will ensure you really understand them and expose any gaps in knowledge that you might have. Ask yourself questions about what you are doing and why. Think-alouds help students to consciously monitor and reflect upon what they are learning. The Think Aloud strategy encourages conversations about reading for understanding. Another strategy I would use is "asking myself questions." Asking questions allows learners to reflect on their own learning processes and strategies (McGuire, 2018).

Some metacognitive questions I can ask myself are:

Does this answer make sense given the information provided?

What strategy did I use to solve this problem that was helpful?

How does this information conflict with my prior understanding?

Another good strategy is writing. Writing can help me organize my thoughts and assess what I know. Just like thinking aloud, writing can help me identify what I do and don’t know, and how I am thinking about the concepts that I’ve learned. Writing out what I know and what questions I have about the learning objectives for each topic I am learning is a great strategy to use (McGuire, 2018).
