At the end of the External Links section on Blackboard, you will find a list of links to webpages presenting Soviet and Post-Soviet Life in the photo works of Russian and foreign photographers. There are many links, and there are also 2 file attachments. Don’t delay initiating this work and start thinking early how you will be structuring your essay. I also request that you use at least a few good, reliable scholarly sources (scholarly articles, book chapters and monographs going beyond our class readings) to frame your own analysis.

You need to clearly understand the historical context of each photo, meaning when it was made and what was going on in Russia at that time. If you don’t understand the meaning of the photo, conduct yur own research online and consult people who might be able to clarify the meaning and the context. Please always refer to particular time periods; don’t assume that "he Soviet period" was always the same: 1930s were very different from, say, 1970s.

I would be interested in learning the following things from your essays:

1) What can you learn from these photos about the organization of life, about people, about ideas and behaviors in Soviet and Post-Soviet times? What can you learn about gender roles? What can you say about people’s relationship to each other, to their family, to work, to the state? What did it mean to be a child in the Soviet Union? How was it to be old? What does it mean to be rich nowadays? All kinds of social and moral issues that you will observe, will work.

2) Many of the photos either contain intended jokes and grotesque or they create a poetic, romantic attitude toward people presented. I would like to hear about the subjectivity of the photographers in creating these kinds of framing. Are the photos by foreign photographers different from the Russian ones? If so, in what way? What kind of effect did they want to achieve? What role did the art of photography play in the Soviet society and in the foreign media?

3) How is modern Russia different from the Soviet one? How is modern photography gaze different from the previous ways to see and focus?

On your syllabus in the explanation of essay tasks you have almost the same questions, but asked differently. Feel free to use and combine both explanations.

I want for everyone to watch at least five full-length films, or a longer series, or a substantial selection of shorts (including cartoons). You can concentrate either on one genre (like comedy, war movies, etc.) or look at how Russian life is presented in different genres and different times in the history of Russian cinema. I want you to look both at representations of Russian life and how cinematographers seek to represent it for the purposes of their art.

You need to clearly understand the historical context of each movie, meaning when it was made and what was going on in Russia at that time as well as what historical period is presented in the movie and what was going on in the country back then. I encourage you to read all the descriptions and comments on YouTube, Netflix and such and make sure you understand the context. Please always refer to particular periods, don’t assume "Soviet period" was always the same: 1930s were very different from, say, 1970s.

Please write down your observations of power and authority, gender roles, family and work relations, and class issues as well as emotions, humor and bitterness. What does cinema tell us about how people used to live in Russia? How is Russian cinema different from other national cinematic traditions that you are familiar with?

While working on this project, you should concentrate on how Russian / Soviet life is portrayed through the prism of the writer’s perception. What specific features of the Russian life of the period are you able to notice? What kind of issues seem to be important to the author? What literary means does the author use, what can be said about the style and the place this work occupies in the literary process? Please be historically sensitive, look at the dates and think of what was going on in Russia at the moment of writing.

I’d ike for everyone to read at least three novels or a substantial selection of short stories or poetry. You can concentrate on one genre or author; as an alternative, you can look at how Russian life was presented in different genres at different times by different authors throughout the history of Russian literature.
