Journal 7: Paper Brainstorming Paper 2

Choose a story that we have read so far that you are interested in using for Paper 2. If you would like to do a story we have not read yet, please feel free to send me an email and propose your idea. Write 2 to 3 paragraphs about that story addressing the following questions.

If you have an idea for a thesis statement, you may try to write 2 to 3 paragraphs focused on analyzing the story using that thesis statement.  Remember a good thesis statement makes a specific argument about one of the following things: characters, setting, plot, setting, a symbol, motif, or theme. A good thesis should be focused on something particular, rather than broad.

For thinking about a thesis, I’d suggest choosing one of the categories below and just focusing on addressing the questions in that category using the story. Try to find specific quotes from the text that you can use to support this thesis and respond to them. Your textbook also has some great ideas for writing about character, setting (etc.) at the end of the chapters.

If you are unclear about your thesis statement, you can just respond in paragraph form to the questions below. This will help you generate ideas and think about the story more deeply.

·         Point of View. What is the point of view of the story? (First Person, Second Person, Third Person, etc.)  Is the narrator reliable our unreliable? Are they omniscient (all-knowing) or do they have limited omniscience? (know only the thoughts of one character)

·         Characters: Does the story have a protagonist or antagonist? Are the characters dynamic? Do they change or stay the same in response to the conflict? Do you find the characters sympathetic and/or relatable? Are any of the characters interesting to compare? (because they are either similar or incredibly different)

·         Plot: What happens in the story? What seems to the main conflict, the rising action, the turning point or climax, the resolution?

·         Setting. Does setting (place or time period) play a crucial role in story? If so, what role does it play? For example, consider how setting plays a role in the story “A Good Man is Hard to Find.”

·         Symbols: Are there any important symbols in the story? For example, is there an object that has significance?

·         Motifs: Are there any important objects, situations, or themes that repeat throughout the script of the short story?
