Most states the minimum voting age is 18. This right is guaranteed by the 26th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which says "The right of citizens of the United States, who are 18 years of age or older, to vote, shall not be denied…"
Interestingly, it doesn’t say a state can’t let a younger person vote. If you turned 18 sometime in summer of 2020, you are able to vote in that up-coming presidential election (November 2020), but not in the primary that was held a few months prior. That’s like missing the beginning of the movie! Primary elections are where the nominees for the November election are chosen.
One idea that has been discussed in Texas Legislature in the past is to let people vote in primary elections as long as they’re going to turn 18 in time for the November election. Numerous other states already permit this. This proposed state constitutional amendment failed in Texas, meaning some 17-year-olds’ across the US can participate in the presidential/congressional primaries, while others cannot. Would you support a Texas Constitutional Amendment lower the voting age to 17 in primaries, assuming that 17 year old turns 18 by the general election the following November?
