After reading Chapter 15, you should have at least a basic understanding of how rhythm is often embedded into a poem. Scansion involves identifying the particular pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in a line of poetry.
The most well-known rhythmic pattern in poetry is iambic pentameter, which is the pattern that Shakespeare popularized and followed almost exclusively in his poetry and plays. The term iambic pentameter refers to a set of 5 (penta-) iambs (defined on p. 524 as a pattern consisting of one unstressed syllable + one stressed syllable). If a poet used a pattern of 3 iambs per line of poetry, that rhythmic pattern would be called iambic trimeter(three sets of iambs). Review pp. 524-525 for more explanations of these terms.
When you apply the technique of scansion to a poem, you are labeling every syllable as either a stressed or unstressed syllable. The symbol for a stressed syllable looks like an apostrophe, whereas the symbol for an unstressed syllable looks like a small "u" above the syllable. I have provided an example that illustrates what a poem analyzed for rhythm (or meter) looks like. After labeling the poem correctly, you should be able to identify the overall metrical/rhythmic pattern (e.g., trochaic trimeter, iambic tetrameter, dactylic dimeter, anapestic hexameter).
See how I marked the excerpt from the poem “The Charge of the Light Brigade” by Alfred, Lord Tennyson (in the attached file). Then, you will do your own for the first four stanzas of Jane Taylor’s “The Star” (p. 529), and then upload a scanned or photographed copy of your completed scansion. You need to scan or photograph, and then upload, only the page that includes the four stanzas from “The Star.”
