– You are a member of the Constitutional Convention who has returned to your home state after helping draft the Constitution. Now you are doing everything you can to convince the people of your state that ratification of is necessary. Your cousin, an avowed Anti-Federalist, has written a letter to you explaining his grievances: Namely fear of an overly powerful and tyrannical federal government.
Using readings from Hennessey and McConnell’s The United States Constitution: A Graphic Adaptation, Eric Foner’s Give Me Liberty: Volume 1, and the Constitution itself, write a 3–5-page double spaced letter to your cousin explaining to him why his fears are unfounded in at least three of the following areas:
Within Article I:
- The Bicameral Legislature and proportional and equal representation
- The Necessary and Proper Clause
- Congress’s Power to Declare War
Within Article II:
- The Electoral College and the Presidency
- The President as Commander-in-Chief
Within Article III:
- Lifetime Appointment
- Authority over questions of Constitutional and Federal Law
- Article V: The Amendment Process
Requirements:
- The paper must be submitted as a PDF. No other file format will be accepted.
- The paper must include at least three direct quotations from the Constitution, one for each of your component arguments.
- You must provide analysis of the Constitution and the debate over its ratification, and a coherent argument for your overall thesis (that the Constitution is not as threatening as your cousin imagines) and each of your component points.

- Do not cite Foner or Hennessey and McConnell in the main text of your paper, or with a parenthetical citation. Simply give footnotes for what you are citing.
- Do not directly reference them in your letter, e.g. “Do not worry cousin; as Hennessey and McConnell point out in The United States Constitution: A Graphic Adaptation, the Bill of Rights will protect the trial rights of US citizens.”
- Again, a footnote citation is all you need.
