Your Draft Survey Instructions

Please submit your draft survey here, and read the following directions carefully.

Your survey should consist of 5 demographic questions and 10-15 questions that will help to answer your overarching research question. Make sure your research question is located on your survey.

For this survey, participants will not identify his/herself by name, so please make sure you do not have a question for name. The questions that you ask will totally depend on your research question.

The survey should be easy to read: at least size 12 font, free of grammatical and spelling errors, and organized with numbered questions and/or bullet points.

Format: Your questions should be evenly spaced out. Remember to include responses for your participants: multiple choice, true/false, or Likert scale. If you are using a scale (eg Likert scale) the choices should be evenly spaced out as discussed in the chapters of either textbook. The survey should be on one page but can stretch to two pages, as long as you make sure the participants know there are two pages.

Keep in mind you will use Excel to analyze the data so close ended questions will be tallied and open ended questions will be compared to each other and evaluated for common themes that occur for each question. It is best for all questions to have available answers for the participants: Multiple Choice, Likert Scale, or True/Flase.

I suggest for you to submit a few more questions than you expect to ask so that if you receive feedback that certain question should not be included on your survey, you will still have sufficient questions.

Background information:

At some point in your life you have completed a survey, whether it was the end of the semester course survey, a questionnaire in your doctors office, an online survey, a person asking question in a mall, etc…

One thing most of you have experienced was reluctance to complete the survey. If it seemed too wordy, or the text font seemed too small or if it seemed as if it would take up to much of your time, you probably thought twice.

When you create your survey, you want to make it as easy as possible for the reader to read and answer the questions (as stated in the original instructions). All of the chapters covered this week provide excellent examples of how to word questions, and how to format the question (and answer choices).

I am not giving a specific example because your survey will depend on your research question and the questions that you decide to ask to answer your questions. However, if you do a Google search using example of surveys you will get hundreds if not thousands of results.

Some things that you will notice is that that they are evenly spaced, does not contain grammatical or spelling errors, are not too wordy (answer choice is a few words). I strongly encourage for you to place all of your questions on one page. 

You need to have a minimum of ten questions and five demographic questions. As stated in the instructions, please feel free to add a few questions if you want to, to ensure that you will have ten questions after I review your survey.
