Ever sit down to watch something that blew you away and made you wonder, “how did they come up with that?!” Or perhaps the opposite occurred and you thought, “What were they thinking? I could do better!” Ever dream of creating your own movie or television show? Now is your chance.

Many are using their time during the pandemic to write their novel, poetry, screenplay, or drama. While, for many of us, getting beyond the blank screen is a real struggle. If that is true for you as well, we will attempt to work through those blocks in a short, timed, low-pressure writing prompt. (If you anxious about writing, I encourage you to check out some of the (optional) resources below to help get you started.)

How to Begin

Speaking personally as a writer and theatre artist, the hardest part for me is often the act of beginning–that is moving beyond the blank page. While there are multiple techniques and tricks, one of the most effective strategies I’ve used (personally and while working with students), is to set a timer and force myself to write without editing, erasing or judging. Settling down with my coffee or water, I silence my devices to minimize distractions, then I write and keep writing. This technique is one I’ve turned to in college and in graduate school, and it involves writing whatever comes to your mind–and when you get stuck– note that (and literally write, “I’m stuck, I’m stuck, I’m stuck…) until you’re no longer blocked. Keep writing until the timer stops and then go back and determine what you might be able to use.

Likewise, there are several approaches to creating a play, but what has been especially productive for my practice and that of my students, is to start with a character and the story. What does the character want? Why does she/they need it? Who or what stands in her/their way? What is she afraid of? Why? Then I think about where we are. What is the world we’re in? Who else is there and what do they want?

At this point, you may begin the playwriting exercise using the following video as a prompt or you may refer to the written prompt below.

"Playwriting Assignment 2.1: Playwriting Prompt – A Guided Writing Exercise Video"

You may follow the video prompts or set your own timer and proceed to write following the prompts below. It is designed to be completed in ten minutes.

1. Think of a Character. (Set timer for 1 minute.)

2. What do they want? (NEED) (Set your timer for 1 minute.)

3. Write what they say until I interrupt you. (Set a timer for 3 minutes.)

4. The last person your character wants to see enters the stage. (Introduction of CONFLICT) The intruder says two sentences. Write those sentences. (Set the timer for 2 minutes.)

5. Your character says one last line and exits. (Set the timer for 2 minutes.)

6. The intruder gets one final line.  End of scene. (RESOLUTION) Write this line. (Set the timer for 1 minute.)

Note:
While I am not "watching" over you during this process, I urge you to limit your time and to stay focused within that period of time. Rather than sweating over it, I encourage you to give yourself permission to go for it–and then let it go. Worry less about it being “good” or “finished.” Remember: this is an exercise and that writing is a process filled with revision. Give yourself permission to share this early and raw material. That said, many folks enjoy this process and elect to return to their pieces to revise as they see fit, and that’s great, too. Have fun!
