The causes of the disparities in this juvenile justice group include exposure to childhood trauma and unaddressed behavioral health issues. Mental health disparities also exist between genders: 24.5% of women have been diagnosed with mental illness versus 16.3% of men, according to NIMH.
If I had unlimited resources the mental health crisis would have the resources for improved definitive diagnosis tools. Treatment and ongoing monitoring with regular check ins with the professionals is important for long term well being. Resources would be spent on paying and recruiting psychiatrists, psychologist, counselors and social workers who are trained and understand the needs of this population. Develop crisis intervention teams trained to be deployed for crisis intervention in real time. The hospital Emergency departments are a landing place for the mentally ill that have not broken the law to be sent to jail but unfortunately the ED is not helping these folks, Placement is impossible so these patients get lost in the system and often return time and time again. Mental illness deserves the resources like cancer, diabetes and heart disease.
