My name Rena Alana Dosantos about twenty years ago I attended Hostos Community College. However, due to a learning condition called Dyscalculia, which at the time was undiagnosed, I was unable to complete my course. Dyscalculia is the numerical equivalent of dyslexia. It is a brain disorder that causes severe difficulty in making arithmetical calculations. People with Dyscalculia experience numbers as an enormous challenge and find difficulty learning even simple arithmetic. They often struggle with key concepts like bigger vs. smaller and have a hard time doing basic math problems and more abstract math. This was not diagnosed at the time and severely affected my academic progress. Being unable to grasp simple math assignments caused constant shame, guilt, and depression—the imbecile in a room inhabited by competence. I was in the dark, fumbling around for answers that other colleagues seemed to find without much ado. When it became too much, I chose to drop my classes and pursue my other ambitions.
As a student, I became resourceful at “hiding” my disorder from educators and peers. However, It was harder to hide from my mother. Due to the condition, she would often demoralize, berate, and even whip me. She relished with delight telling others how stupid I was, especially if I received a compliment about my appearance. She amused herself visited by asking me to read. I would be so terrified that I would freeze, unable to utter a single word. No sound would leave my lips and when it did, it would be an incoherent panicked cacophony. School was much kinder, where most people loved me. Boys thought I was pretty and would “help” me with my schoolwork, homework, and exams. Girls wanted to be friends with me because of the boys. Teachers often made me their pet. None of which helped. My academic performance was still a problem.
In 2004 I married a wealthy Italian Restauranteur. My life became filled with helping my husband run the business. So, my degree was less of a priority. But in 2014, my husband died after a five-year battle with cancer. Needless to say, our finance took a huge hit. After selling most of our assets to pay of debts and creditors, I was left with enough money to live comfortably for quite a few years. Also, I still had a restaurant to keep me afloat while figuring out my next step.
In the fall of 2015, I decided to return to Hostos Community College. Once again I could not complete my math requirements, once again. None-the-less, upon my return, a professor introduced me to Mr. Perez, the head of “Accessibility Resource Center”. As it’s known, ARC is a place on campus where students go to receive support on their disclosed disability. Mr. Perez informed me that the City University of New York (CUNY) was attempting to adapt its curriculum to aid students with my condition. Though, I would have to be tested by a licensed Psychologist. It took a while, but it finally happened. CUNY implemented the protocol that allowed my condition to be recognized as a disability. Now I would take alternative classes if math wasn’t a prerequisite for my major. I was tested in 2019 and subsequently re-enrolled at Hostos in the spring of 2020. Since my return to Hostos, I’ve managed to graduate this past fall semester with 10 A’s and one B. I don’t have to tell you what class that B is in because you already know it’s my old Nemeses, “Math.” Which I’m happy to say has made this whole journey worthwhile.
I am proud of myself and would like to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Psychology at Hunter College. I will not stop here. My ultimate goal is to attain a PhD in Psychology. That has been my academic dream since leaving Hostos 20 years ago. My professional goal is to become a renowned leader in child psychology. Specifically, as a licensed professional psychologist, I want to be at the forefront in improving learning condition for children with learning dsabilities. Learning disability is more widespread than commonly known. Children with learning disorders often need extra help and instruction that are specialized for them. Many schools lack programs that can identify these issues in a timely manner, causing untold misery and poor academic performance on the part of the child. Many come up with coping mechanism, which if interrogated carefully could lead to possible avenues for interventions. I would like be a leading researcher in this area and be able to identify the patterns and triggers they often use as coping mechanisms. Early diagnosis and management could go a long way in providing the affected children with academic opportunities. They should be well able to attain the highest level of academic achievement as desired and I want be a leader in making this possible.
In closing, without the endless support from CUNY, I would not be the person I am today. Recently, I joined the “Leadership Program” at Hostos to share my story and inspire others. What CUNY has given me could never be quantified. It has changed my life’s trajectory. I hope you recognize my potential and what I have to offer the world. Thank you for your time.
