Consider the kinds of questions that inform a qualitative approach

SOCW–6301: SOCIAL WORK PRACTICE RESEARCH 1

Discussion: Qualitative Research Questions

Research questions that lend themselves to a qualitative approach often address questions about how people construct meaning. In this way, qualitative research questions set the stage for open-ended, inductive inquiry.

For this Discussion, review the case study entitled, “Social Work Research: Program Evaluation.” Consider the kinds of questions that inform a qualitative approach. Think about the quantitative method described in the case study and consider methods you might use to investigate the effectiveness of a program from a qualitative perspective.

RE: Discussion – Week 6

COLLAPSE

What kinds of research questions lead to a qualitative approach?

Research questions deal with and identify the main focus of the research. this helps with describing what is going to explore, discovered and understood. This cause and effect focus on being able to discuss problems open-ended and easily understood. (Yegidis, Weinbach, & Myers, 2018). Qualitative designs are measuring and casing the impact of the treatment or experimental regimen (Liets and Zayas 2010). Qualitative measures valuers and explores research by using observation and non-numerical data such as symbols. This helps with understanding the underlying issue by also providing insight for valuable data to be formulated.

If you chose to conduct quantitative research in your week 4 proposal, how might you reframe the research question in a way that lends itself to a qualitative approach?

Due to the lack of self-reporting, there is a lack of data when research “Why are men treated differently from women when reporting sexual assault by women?”. Because there is a lack of self-reporting the researcher must observe the participant in their natural setting, by intercepting the data and having an open mind when doing the research process. (Yegidis, Weinbach, & Myers, 2018)

Cognitive processing therapy helps victims understand what happens to them as a way of coping with sexual assault. It also helps with avoiding painful memories by allowing the victim to write their thoughts down and read them back to process what has happened. The cognitive processing therapy also helps with self-blame, accepting that the rape is not the victim’s fault. The cognitive process can help victims identify with things when it’s hard to discuss

Reframing the research question:  What percentage of males report sexual assault have experienced signs of depression? What percentage of males are sexually assaulted by someone they know?

If you focused on a qualitative proposal in week 4, describe the qualitative research question and explain the rationale for choosing a qualitative approach.

Empirical research helps the researcher to understand social reactions to survivors of sexual assault. Using qualitative methodology sexual assault cases can be studied explores to find self-care, more advocating for awareness, coping skills and disclosure of sexual assault.

Be sure to explain how you might collect the data.

Face to face interviews can be used discreetly with collecting data pertaining to men that have been sexually assaulted by a woman. Focus groups can be used a qualitative. Whereas the focus would be on males that were sexually assaulted from ages 18-25. Data collection among age groups, race, and economic status can help with collecting dating.

Consider which qualitative method would be most suitable for answering the research question.

Based on reflection data collection and action that aims to improve using participating action would be suitable for answering the research  question Participating action takes into consideration people views and feeling without controlling or manipulating them (Liets and Zayas 2010).  Speaking out allows a sexual assault victims to advocate for themselves by addressing  their issues and feelings.
