Electronic health records (EHR) are the emerging digital medical records that are being utilized by most of the physicians and health care facilities throughout the world. (Healthit.gov, 2012) discusses the benefits and key features of EHR as opposed to paper charting withing the health record. EHR streamlines data to the healthcare provider and allows them quick and easy access to healthcare records and test results that may have taken days with paper charting. The EHR also allows for access to medical records and testing from other facilities that makes diagnosis and intervention for patients easier.
Telehealth is an ever-growing field, even more so since the corona pandemic. There are a variety of telemedicine avenues that are utilized. With nursing care, in my unit, telecommunication is used daily to call and check on chemotherapy patients after treatment to monitor symptoms. A series of questions are asked and documented in the electronic medical record for the provider to be able to access. McGonigle & Mastrian (2017) discuss the varieties of telemedicine available. They also discuss the importance of telecommunication in nursing in the future. With the average life expectancy growing and health care worker shortage, telehealth is expected to be more popular to reduce the workload of healthcare works and the burden of the elderly to constantly leave their home for access to healthcare.
Home telemonitoring has become more popular with patient with chronic conditions. Patients are given the supplies necessary to monitor things such as blood pressure, glucose, and weight for home and input the data that is transmitted to a nurse. When a value is abnormal, the nurse touches base with the patient first and the primary care provider if indicated by the values reported. Li, et al (2021) discusses the importance of home telemonitoring but also provider resistance that has been met with in the transition.

General Healthcare Trends
There are always evolving healthcare technology trends. A few of the most popular technology trends sweeping through healthcare include the use of artificial intelligence (AI), telemedicine, the Internet of Things (IoT) and wearables, and healthcare security (Tsymbal, 2021). I think that telemedicine and wearable healthcare technology hold the most promise and will be key in preventative care and reducing hospital admissions and improving overall health for major populations. The healthcare organization I work for has been trying to keep up with the newest technology as well as create technological advances. I work at OSF Saint Francis Healthcare and they created the Jump Trading and Simulation Center which has labs that focus on neuroscience, advanced imaging, data informatics and design, and interprofessional education. The Children’s Innovation Lab focuses on neurological conditions, pulmonary acoustic telemetry. The lab is creating sensors that can continuously monitor lung function as well as classify sounds that could detect respiratory problems. The sensors will also provide a 3D representation of where lung noises are originating from, which will aid a doctor in determining the source of the problem (Jump Simulation, n.d.). Another portion of technology that has improved outcomes and satisfaction for patients is the utilization of the Epic MyChart app. I worked at a pulmonary clinic before going back to the hospital so I had a lot of patients who utilized the MyChart app to schedule appointments, message the physician/nurses, request medication refills and so much more. The application is wonderful because the patient has full access to their healthcare record. They can also pay medical bills, see COVID-vaccination/other immunization records. The records can also be easily shared with other providers in a safe and timely manner (MyChart, n.d.).
Risks and Challenges
Healthcare technology has so many benefits to increasing communication, outcomes, and satisfaction with providers and patients. With that being said, there are also some challenges. There is a specific patient population that does not have the means to get a MyChart app. These patients may not have smartphones, internet or computer access, or the education on the importance of healthcare management through these tools. These patient populations could be elderly, low-income, or living in regions that do not utilize newer technology altogether. These are all barriers we want to fight to create opportunities for patients to utilize simple technology to better their healthcare experience.
