Identify similarities and differences between action research and traditional research

Action research and traditional research share a few commonalities. First, both research methods use data to ultimately test a hypothesis that inspired the need for data collection. Secondly, both research methods use a lot of the same techniques for data collection and analysis. However, there are also key differences between action and traditional research. Action research focuses on relevance and case studies to generate real-world applications for the research findings. Traditional research simply looks to fill in gaps in existing research findings. Action research also involves the subjects/organization directly with the research process, helping them add value to their organization from the start. Traditional research waits until all data is collected before any conclusions are drawn. Lastly, action research tries to shorten the length of surveys to encourage higher response rates and honesty. Traditional research tries to get the most answers out of anyone willing to sit down and take the survey (Zhang, Levenson, Crossley 2014).

 

Most simply, a business would rather use an action research approach due to the immediate applicability of the findings to add value to the organization. An example of applying action research could be a company trying to improve their employee turnover rate. A hypothesis might be drawn that the quality of line managers are ruining the work environment for lower level employees, driving them out the door. Using an action research approach would ensure that more employees answer survey questions, improve the quality of the responses, and allow upper management to make appropriate changes to start improving employee turnover before the research has been finished.
