Every team goes through a five-step evolution. Consider a team you are a part of or have been a part of at work.

Please write a response to the students statement below:

The five steps to team evolution are forming, storming, norming, performing, and adjourning. In short, an explanation of the stages are:

Forming – Members of a team getting acquainted

Storming – Member’s personalities emerge and may cause conflict

Norming – Conflict is resolved, and a sense of unity and cohesion emerges

Performing – Clear and stable structure and members are committed to the mission

Adjourning – Most team goals are accomplished, and members disband

I am an aircrew member in the Air Force flying our country’s top representatives in Washington. Anytime a representative requires an official flight and a mission is generated, we have to quickly get past the forming, storming, and norming stages of team development. Our planning and preparation phase on a mission is time-sensitive as some of our flights may suddenly require an earlier departure. Many times, the other aircrew members I am assigned to a mission with I have already flown with in the past. This helps us to break past the early stages of team development quickly. Another element that gets everyone to the performing stage fast is we have a clearly defined leader and structure at the beginning of our team assignment and critical time-sensitive objectives to meet. The performing stage is clearly reached when we are in-flight and providing service to our customers. Everyone on the jet that is aircrew has a defined role and responsibility and works diligently to accomplish their part to the mission. The adjourning stage is when our airplane finally lands back at our home airfield, the engines are off, and everyone deplanes the jet.
