My discussion post:
1. Identify and explain one advantage and one disadvantage of the digitization of Humanities resources.
Digitization refers to the conversion of an analog signal into digital codes. Digitization is used in humanities to allow for detailed, up-to-date catalogs and structured collection management. Digitized materials may include books, journals, maps, photographs, and paintings among others. One advantage of digitization of humanities resources is the display and access of materials that would otherwise be inaccessible in other formats, for example, large maps and volumes of data. Digitization allows for these materials to be enhanced into digital forms and allows access to the individual components within the materials. Digitization also allows for these large volumes of data to be integrated into learning materials, enhance searchability, and thus reduce the cost of material delivery. One disadvantage of the digitization of humanities resources is the digitization of three-dimensional objects. The digitization process becomes more complex and challenging when the objects to be digitized also become complex. The digitization process becomes expensive when creating and manipulating the large sizes objects and time-consuming (Melissa, 2022).
2. Explain the difference between a digital repository and a digital project.
Digital projects refer to the transformation of scholarly important objects such as images and texts into a digitized form for enhanced and specialized analysis. The digital project involves planning, preparation, and production of electronic publications. Digital repository, on the other hand, refers to the recorded data and information produced by an organization such as data sets, reports, or books among others. Digital repositoriesmay also refer to online archives for storing digital objects or collection of online resources.
3. Find a specific digital repository OR digital project online.
Duke University Libraries Repository Collections and Archives
The Digital Repositories at Duke address the different needs of materials and provide access to library materials and services to the members of the Duke community. The repositories focus on two areas which are the library collections and Duke scholarship. The library collection is divided into two: digitized collections and acquired materials. Duke library provides access to unique materials such as visual, audio, or print media. Duke libraries also contain digital materials licensed or purchased by the library such as newspapers, and e-books among others. It also contains research data, publications, thesis, and dissertations produced by Duke Faculty and the students. Duke Scholarship provides a platform that facilitates research, documentation, software, and other codes to be deposited and published with DOI. The research data repository is accessible to Duke Authors where they submit their scholarly publications. Duke University’s modern library traces its roots to the libraries maintained by the campus literary societies back in early 1800. The repository contains various subjects in humanities such as art, music, history, languages, theater, and religion.
The repository uses a search and finds engine when looking for resources. The website contains guides that refer an individual to books and media, articles, journal titles, research databases, film & video, music, and images among others. The website does not however contain a mapping tool. One challenge faced when navigating the information is obtaining the specific information required. The website also had repetitive title tags and unnecessary tags in title tags.
