10990For this discussion, please read “Rose for Emily,” “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” and “Araby” Please respond to “one” of the following questions
1. Is “A&P” narrated in the past or present tense? How does the verb tense affect your reading of the story?
2. How would the effect of “A&P” be different if it were narrated by a non-participant narrator? How it be different with an omniscient narrator?
3. How would you describe the narrator of “A Rose for Emily”? Is this a first-person narrator (i.e., a character in the story) or a third person narrator (i.e., a voice that stands outside the story)? Who is the narrator referring to when he or she refers to “we” in the story? How do these references to a “we” affect our understanding of Miss Emily’s situation?
4. Does the narrative voice or focus shift during “A Rose for Emily” or does it remain consistent? What details or passages are significant in revealing point of view, and what is the effect of these passages?
5. How would you describe the point of view in Joyce’s story “Araby” (i.e., first person or third person? objective, limited, or omniscient?)? Do you think the story would be more or less effective if told using a different point of view? How does this point of view contribute to the story’s effect or meaning?
6. From what point of view is “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” told? What does this point of view, including both voice (who speaks) and focus (from whose perspective), contribute to the story, and how would the story be different if it were told in a different voice or from a different angle of vision?
7. Locate an incident in “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been” which the narrator describes from a particular character’s point of view. What is the effect of that focalization? How would the effect of the incident itself be different if that event were narrated without access to the character’s point of view or with access to a different character’s point of view?
