Student Success Criteria

View the grading rubric for this deliverable by selecting the “This item is graded with a rubric” link, which is located in the Details & Information pane.

Scenario

Your executive director has tasked you with conducting some preliminary research on an emerging and perhaps even controversial topic in your field and then preparing a summary. These findings will be presented at the next board of directors meeting in order to assess whether or not funding should be allocated for further study. You received little direction on what types of sources are expected, so you decide to begin the project by evaluating a variety of resources to determine how best to inform your project.

Instructions

Choose a topic on a newer or emerging topic in your field of study.

  • Use the Rasmussen library databases to locate a minimum of five peer-reviewed, scholarly articles, published in the past five years, on this topic.
  • Use a general search engine to locate a minimum of five non-scholarly sources, published within the last three years, on this topic

Marie,

Thank you for your initial work on this assignment. You have selected a good topic and located helpful resources. I appreciate you filling out the matrix and providing a summary of your sources.

I have made rather extensive notes on your paper relative to developing categories of your matrix further and re-formatting your summary into an essay, instead of presenting it as an annotated bibliography.

Specifically, I ask that you rework your Reliability column on your matrix. Nearly all of your examples show credibility. I have provided an explanation of the types of things that constitute reliability on you paper. I also noticed that when you do not see a bias in your source, you simply write "The article is unbiased" or some variation of this comment. The purpose/bias category serves two purposes: One, if there is bias you can identify and describe it; Two, if there is no apparent bias, you should explain the purpose/the goal of the article. As such, you need to develop comments in this section as well. I mentioned opportunities, as well, to explain relevance for some of your entries, clarify when authors are not listed (particularly in your non-scholarly section), and check for editing needs.

In terms of your summary, please write an essay which integrates your sources into a discussion about credibility and reliability instead of list each one as if in an annotated bibliography. I also noted in comments on your paper that most of your examples have to do with credibility. Please be sure to provide and explain examples of reliability as well.

Please review my comments on your paper and on the rubric as well. Please don't hesitate to reach out with questions.

These are examples of credibility, not reliability. Reliability focuses on things like study design, use of data gathering tools or practices that are consistent and vetted. It is also about inter-rater alignment, replicability of a study, and the methods used to determine the validity and accuracy of findings. Focus on these types of things in this column.
