Thinking on how I show up in a business or team environment I’ve determined a few ways I have felt different from the people around me. Some of these differences come from my background while others come from my personality or interests.
The 6 that stand out most are as follows:
15 years of military service – I don’t often relate to civilian peers the same way they relate to one another.
Military structure – I tend to take charge of the situation instead of remaining quiet or having to wait for direction from higher.
Younger than most in my position – This gives me a different perspective than those who may have been in the position for a long time and have become complacent.
Workplace Social Events – I prefer to be outdoors hiking or camping over being in a large social event.
Mission oriented – Meaning I focus on goals, planning, and structure more than those social dynamics.
Accustomed to high pressure environments – With this I typically remain calm during conflict, uncertainty, or fast changing situations.
Being different can be both empowering and isolating at the same time. I do often feel as though I am on the outside because my experiences don’t always line up with most of those in the civilian realm. Daft (2021) explains that diversity can strengthen teams because it brings new perspectives and broader problem-solving abilities. When I keep that in mind it helps me appreciate my differences rather than feeling out of place.
The differences I’m most proud of are my military background and the leadership mindset it gave me. Outdoor mindset – this gives me a more reflective and creative approach to problem-solving
