Two years ago, I had taken time off from work so I could have surgery. On the 5ht day after surgery I had gotten a call from my supervisor about an event that had happened the night before. A local warehouse had 1400 gas furnaces fall over in the warehouse causing damage to the floor, racking, and power equipment. Fortunately, no one was injured, however the manufacturing side of the business was still making more furnaces and loading trailers because the warehouse was unusable. The ask was to open up a temporary satellite warehouse where we could operate for the next few months, but needed Wi-Fi, ability to utilize our WMS, was close enough to complete transfers, had transportation provider access, and a staff to run it. Setting up a new facility with these requirements would usually take 3 to 5 months to shop and set up. I had contracts signed and freight moving into the facility within a week, and barely able to talk because the surgery I had was to replace a disc in my neck. The Dr had to move my voice box to the side to perform the surgery.
What coping strategies did you use to get through the situation?
For this task I created the list of items that needed complete and prioritized the list. In between each task, throughout the day and the upcoming week, I would step away for short walks and concentrated breathing techniques.
How did the stress affect you? How did you manage it?
Early in my career stress would affect my sleep, the way I ate, and how I communicated with my wife. Over the years, and in this this situation, managing the stress was a little easier because I knew what needed done. The task list of items was a huge help on remembering each detail. Going back and double checking my work also helped with managing the stress levels. I also always take a step away to breath and take a few minutes. Clear my head, play a game on my phone would also help to not get consumed.
Incorporate the concept of resiliency. Did you bounce back better?
Yes. Sticking with something, after a short break, will keep me motivated and help show the light at the end of the tunnel. The time to refocus also allows other ideas to present themselves that may not have come up with taking that small break.
How was your level of motivation affected?
Initially, when the task was presented, yes, my motivation was affected. I honestly thought the task was a bit unattainable in the time frame that was asked. However, my leader at the time, Doug Scott, was convincing when he said, “we need you”, and “you got this”. He made me want to do a good job.
Whose responsibility is it to manage employee motivation in the workplace?
I feel that both the management team, as well as the employees are equally responsible to manage employee motivation. It’s easy to get stagnate, or complacent at work. Having a leader who challenges you, as well as an employee that challenges themselves, is a perfect recipe to keep teams motivated.
What can you learn from the groups’ strategies as you embark on your leadership career?
I continue to learn, because I will never know everything about my field, and continue to serve. I pride myself on being a leader that says “we” more than “I”. I also try and ask more questions to get the answers from my team instead of telling them the answer, or what I think on the issue to help with employee development.
