1. Attributes/Trait Theories of Leadership
Trait theories suggest that certain individuals possess innate qualities that make them effective leaders. These traits are relatively stable and can include:
Intelligence
Confidence
Integrity
Sociability
Determination
Key Idea: Leaders are born, not made. Criticism: Traits alone do not guarantee leadership success; context and behavior also matter.
2. Emotional Intelligence (EI)
Emotional Intelligence refers to the ability to recognize, understand, manage, and influence emotions in oneself and others. Components of EI (Daniel Goleman):
Self-awareness
Self-regulation
Motivation
Empathy
Social skills
Importance in Leadership:

Builds trust
Improves conflict resolution
Promotes team cohesion
3. Behavioral Theories of Leadership
Behavioral theories focus on what leaders do rather than who they are. Leadership is seen as a set of behaviors that can be learned. Two Main Styles:
Task-oriented (focus on goals and productivity)
People-oriented (focus on relationships and team well-being)
Key Models:
Ohio State Studies (Initiating Structure vs. Consideration)
University of Michigan Studies (Employee-oriented vs. Production-oriented)
4. MBTI Personality Instrument
The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is a personality assessment tool based on Carl Jung’s theory of psychological types. Four Dichotomies:
Extraversion (E) vs. Introversion (I)
Sensing (S) vs. Intuition (N)
Thinking (T) vs. Feeling (F)
Judging (J) vs. Perceiving (P)
Application in Leadership:
Helps leaders understand their own style
Enhances team dynamics
Supports personal development
5. Emotional Intelligence (EI) Test
EI tests assess a person’s ability to perceive, use, understand, and manage emotions. Types of EI Tests:
Self-report questionnaires (e.g., EQ-i)
Ability-based tests (e.g., MSCEIT)
Uses in Leadership:
Identifying strengths and areas for growth
Improving interpersonal effectiveness
Enhancing leadership development programs
6. The Leadership Grid
Developed by Blake and Mouton, the Leadership Grid evaluates leadership styles based on concern for people and concern for production. Five Key Styles:
Impoverished (Low people, low production)
Country Club (High people, low production)
Authority-Compliance (Low people, high production)
Middle-of-the-Road (Moderate concern for both)
Team Leadership (High concern for both)
Ideal Style: Team Leadership (9,9) – promotes collaboration and high performance.
