There are some patients you just know you can joke around with, and they will be receptive. My first year out of NP school I had one of those patients. She was maybe 10 years older than me, pretty, spunky, athletic, and healthy. I saw her for to establish care and while conducting a thorough health history she admitted that she smoked half a pack of cigarettes per day. I looked up at her and said, “People still do that?” with mock shock in my face and voice. We laughed and then talked about her readiness to quit and moved on. A year later I saw her again for her annual wellness visit (yes this was back when women had to get yearly PAP smears!) and she proudly exclaimed that she quit smoking the day I said, “People still do that?”.
These results are not reproducible, I’ve tried with no success. But it is interesting what motivates people. I’m sure we each have our own personal stories about smoking addiction, whether it be personal or professional, about a loved one, or a patient.
