The interrelatedness of human persons at the core of any application of Trinitarian theology suggests that the formation of relationships is indispensable to being human. Those who have experienced multiple significant losses, however, often hesitate to retain other relationships, much less build new relationships, lest they risk further trauma of additional losses. This is especially true when the losses result in “compound grief” due to the inability to fully process one loss before another occurs. Some bereaved, however, maintain a sense of resilience that allows them to continue pursuing other relationships even amidst a series of losses. They do not necessarily have a more robust Trinitarian theology. There appear to be other factors in play, not the least of which is an emotionally healthy network of like-minded individuals who bear one another’s burdens.
Many have observed that hospice teams tend to have a significantly higher percentage of Christians on their paid staff, even where hiring practices carefully balance people from a variety of spiritual backgrounds. The mechanism by which this occurs appears to be that those with a personal faith in God through Christ last longer in hospice care. As others resign after shorter tenures, the balanced hiring practices bring on an equal number of Christians who last longer.
