Purpose

This assignment helps you move from understanding a text to analyzing how it works. You will write a literary précis and develop a working thesis for Essay Project #1.

Connection to Essay #1

This is not extra work. Your précis can become part of your introduction or body paragraph, and your thesis will guide your full essay.

Think of this assignment as building the foundation of your essay.

Your Task

Choose one text that you plan to use for Essay Project #1 and complete the following:

Part 1: Literary Précis (5 Sentences)

Write a literary précis following the structure from the provided handout.

· Sentence 1: Author, title, genre, and a clear statement of the text’s central idea or theme

· Sentence 2: Brief summary of the text (1–2 sentences)

· Sentence 3: How the author develops the theme (structure, devices, progression)

· Sentence 4: Author’s purpose and intended effect on the audience

· Sentence 5: One specific literary device and how it contributes to meaning

Key Idea: A précis explains both what the text says and how the text works.

Part 2: Working Thesis

Write one clear analytical thesis statement based on your text.

Guidelines for a Strong Thesis

· Avoid summary (do not just describe what happens)

· Make a specific claim about meaning

· Focus on how the text creates meaning (literary devices, structure, tone, etc.)

· Be arguable and precise

Weak Thesis (Too General):

“The story shows that freedom is important.”

Stronger Thesis:

In The Story of an Hour, Chopin uses irony and shifting emotional tone to reveal the tension between social expectations and personal freedom.

How to Choose a Strong Thesis

One of the most challenging parts of writing is deciding what to argue. A strong literary thesis does not come from guessing—it comes from asking the right questions about the text.

You may find it helpful to approach your thesis in one of the following ways:

1. What Does the Text Do Well?

Identify something the text does effectively and explain how it achieves that effect.

· How does the author create tension, irony, suspense, or emotional impact?

· What techniques make the poem, story, or play powerful or memorable?

Example: Poe uses rhythm, repetition, and dark imagery to make The Raven memorable and emotionally intense.

2. What Is the Text’s Purpose—and Does It Achieve It?

Consider what the author seems to be trying to do, and analyze how successfully the text accomplishes that goal.

· What idea, message, or experience is the author trying to convey?

· How do literary devices help support that purpose?

Example: Through its use of unreliable narration, The Cask of Amontilladoeffectively reveals the moral emptiness of revenge.

3. How Might the Text Affect the Reader?

Think about how the text shapes the reader’s thoughts, emotions, or perspective.

· What does the reader come to understand, question, or feel?

· How does the author guide that response?

Example: The Yellow Wallpaper uses psychological tension and confined setting to make readers feel the narrator’s isolation and mental unraveling.

Helpful Strategy

A strong thesis often combines these ideas:

· What the text does

· How it does it

· Why it matters

Simple Formula: The author uses [technique] to [do something], which reveals [meaning or effect].

Part 3: Reflection (Short)

In 2–3 sentences, briefly explain:

· Why you chose this text

· How your thesis could develop into a full essay

Length

· Literary Précis: 5 sentences

· Thesis: 1–2 sentences

· Reflection: 2–3 sentences

Submission Guidelines

· Write in complete, grammatically correct sentences

· Include the title and author of your chosen text

· Focus on clarity, precision, and analysis
