Interview Proposal

I will be interviewing Patrica Goldsby, who is 78 years old and is my aunt. She currently lives in Selma Alabama and previously worked as a nurse. I chose to interview her because of her years of experience in the medical field interesting life experiences. The interview will be in person and will last roughly 30-45 minutes. With permission, I will take detailed notes to make sure I precisely capture her responses when writing my reflection.

Proposed Interview Questions and answers

1. Can you tell me a little about yourself and where you grew up?

My name is Patricia Ann Lee Holesby, born January 2, 1948 to Wesley & Bertha Harris Lee. Married to Roosevelt Holesby. Had three children, two boys and a daughter (younger son died in a car accident at the age of 25).

I grew up in Selma, Alabama, attended Clark Elementary School (grades 1st–6th) and R.B. Hudson High School (grades 7th–12th). Graduated high school in May 1966. Graduated Nursing School (Good Samaritan) in September 1968. Married in June 1968.

1. What has been the most important chapter of your life so far?

Becoming a member of the Church of Christ, giving my life to God, finishing nursing school, and having a family of my own.

1. What is the biggest change you’ve seen in the world during your lifetime?

Seeing a Black man ( Barack Obama) elected as President of the United States of America after Black people became eligible to vote.

1. What challenges did you face in your career or family life, and how did you overcome them?

Challenges I face in my family: When my 16-year-old daughter opened an account for a credit card and a credit account at a jewelry store with no job, using forgery and my name. After I notified the companies, I received a copy of the applications, I paid it, and had the account closed. Also threatened to put her in jail if she ever signed my name to anything. Problem solved.

1. What advice would you give to someone starting in adulthood today?

Someone starting adulthood today does not want to listen to what older (elder) adults have to say (they know it all). Anyway, good advice would be to listen to your elders and not your peers. The elders are more experienced and know how things are/would work, and nothing has changed except there were no drugs or gun violence that we as children knew. Always treat others with dignity.

1. How has your definition of happiness or success changed over the years?

My definition of happiness has not changed over the years nor my success. I’m a retired nurse and have no regrets about anything. I have traveled, visited other states and countries, and gone on cruises.

1. What do you feel most proud of?

I am most proud of my children, nieces, and nephews. They are grown and are all safe and know how to work and take care of themselves and each other.

1. Is there anything you would do differently if you could go back?

No, there is nothing I would do different if I could go back. I don’t want to go back.

1. What has getting older taught you about yourself?

Getting old has taught me to be graceful and thankful for getting old. Some did not live to get old. Also, getting old is a good thing, but it hurts (joint pain and aches here and there).

1. What do you hope people remember about you?

Remember, I’m one of dedication, a person that loved taking care of my patients as a nurse, minded my own business unless I was asked for my input, and I loved my family.
