Develop an hypothesis: A hypothesis is a causal relationship between an independent and a dependent variable, or social factor. In science, the independent variable is the one in which the researcher–you in this case–manipulates or changes; the dependent variable is the factor that you believe will change in certain ways and in certain amounts as a result of the change in the independent variable. In short, an hypothesis says that when I change variable A, variable B will change to the following extent in the following manner.
Describe a Norm: In this experiment, you will describe a norm. A norm is an expected behavior shared by members of a group–in this case a group in which you are a member. This norm should be something that you are expected to do for or with a group. For example, you are expected to eat your family meals with utensils. In other words, the norm is for family members to eat with utensils when they are enjoying a meal together.
Violate a Norm: Now describe how you will violate this norm, such as eating your food with your hands while at the family dinner table or at a restaurant (the independent variable), and predict the sanctions, the reactions to your norm violation (the dependent variable). An example of this hypothesis is shown in the attached assignment. At the end of this first week, this hypothesis has to be introduced and described. In addition, you will need to indicate your feelings or emotions as you anticipate the sanctions you might receive as a result of conducting this breeching or norm-violation experiment.
