42839OPEN MEETING REFLECTION PAPER: Assignment Description and Grading Rubric
Attend at least one drug and/or alcohol/other behavioral addictions support group. Examples of these are Alcoholics Anonymous, Al-Anon, and Narcotics Anonymous, Gamblers Anonymous, Debtors Anonymous, etc. Attend OPEN meetings, not closed meetings, unless you consider yourself a member. Should someone ask, please be honest about your reasons for being there. People are typically appreciative of your interest in the organization. Above all, respect the anonymity of people you meet there. You may meet people you know, but did not know about their membership. Do not bring a tape recorder or take notes during the meeting.
Write a professionally typed 3-4 page reaction paper.
Include the following items in the reflection paper:
1.) Begin with a short description: name of group, place and time of meeting, brief description of the demographics of the group, physical surroundings of the meeting and atmosphere and tone.
2.) The meaning of attending this meeting for you. What did you learn about yourself, if any
Include stereotypes and expectations that were shattered or confirmed, surprises, types of
feelings experienced, level of comfort/discomfort, etc
3.) What new learning did you acquire about the nature of self-help groups?
What new learning did you acquire about the nature of addiction? Be sure to integrate class material, readings and theory with your observations.
4.) Include at least one research article. You must reference and cite your work using APA style. Students

(20 points):

(25 points):
• Described what attending this meeting meant to you and what you learned about yourself, if anything.
• Included stereotypes and expectations that were shattered or confirmed, surprises, types of
feelings experienced, level of comfort/discomfort, etc
Content: Connection of outside experience to course learning objectives
(25 points):
• Described what you learned about the nature and philosophy of self-help groups.
• Described and reflected upon any new learning acquired about the nature of addiction?
• Integrated class material, readings and theory with observations.
Writing
(10 points):
•Grammar, punctuation, and spelling are correct
•Logical progression of sentence structure and paragraph structure.
Format
(10 points):
•Paper is typed, 12 point font, 1 inch margins
•Paper is atleast 3-4 full page (excluding title, name, etc.).
In text citations and References
(10 points):
•Atleast ONE reference article is cited within the text and is in the reference list
•In text citation and reference are in APA style.
