43487This will give you a chance to look more closely at the life and career of an African-American blues artist.
Select an African-American artist who participated in the development of the blues, and research this artist and his or her contribution to this genre.
You must use and cite at least three sources outside of this course. (One of the sources can be a Smithsonian Folkways album’s liner notes.)
Include information on where the artist grew up and where he or she developed as a musician. Also include the artist’s influences and the way he or she influenced the genre or American culture. Include the titles of important musical works and a sense of why the artist was important. What was his or her contribution?
If you would rather, you may create a Web page for one of these artists, with appropriate links, photos, discography, sound clips, and other resources. If you do that, paste a link to your Web site in the assignment box, with a brief note about what you were trying to accomplish with the site and why you chose this individual. Remember that people doing Internet research may land on your site, so make it useful and inspiring. Let them know where you found your information, if appropriate, when the site was created, and how they can explore this artist further (minimum word count: 200; please see rubric).
Below is a list of African-American artists who are associated with the blues (they may also have made contributions in other genres). The list is by no means exhaustive. You may choose one of these people for your paper or website, or you may choose another leading blues artist, living or dead. Go for someone who has made an impact on the art in some way.
Some possible African-American blues artists for this assignment include:
Willie Dixon
W. C. Handy
John Lee Hooker
Lightnin’ Hopkins
Howlin’ Wolf
Skip James (don’t miss the early cuts)
Robert Johnson
Magic Sam
Muddy Waters
St. Louis Jimmy Oden
Charley Patton
Ma Rainey
Otis Rush
Mamie Smith
Son House
Otis Spann
Taj Mahal
Koko Taylor
Sonny Terry
Brownie McGhee
T-Bone Walker
Note: The following are examples of people who do not fulfill the requirement:
Eric Clapton (although he has certainly influenced the blues, he is neither American nor black), Duke Ellington (although he was a leading black artist, his primary contribution was in big band and swing, not blues), Count Basie, and Sarah Vaughan (they each did some blues pieces, but they were primarily great jazz musicians).
