When I think about being politically socialized when I was a child, I can only recall learning about politics from research I did by myself. I do recall that when I was younger, I was always told by my parents that one should never talk religion or politics with friends or family. So, if the topic of politics came up in my house, discussion was kept at a minimum. For instance, both of my parents identified as part of the same political party. I was told that it does not matter who was running for President or what their stance was on particular issues, they would always vote for the same political party. According to them, their way of voting was the best and only way to vote. In the textbook Political Science Today, political theory is discussed. Political theory aims to distinguish what is good and what is bad. However, “there might not be any objective standards against which to measure the ideas as being good or bad”(Whitman,2020). My parents never sat my siblings or myself down to explain issues that were relevant in politics such as education, healthcare or the environment, to name a few. Because I felt like I wasn’t getting much information regarding both sides of issues in politics, I took it upon myself to look into and decided for myself what side of the issues I thought was the best side to fall on. However, there is not a “best” side. What is “best” for one may not be “best” for others. I think my interest in learning about politics came during 9/11. I was 11 years old and I could still remember that day like it was yesterday. Even at a young age, I was interested in what the Government was going to do about terrorism. I always felt that I needed to know more, and I wasn’t going to get that type of education from my parents. So, when I heard people discussing politics in public, I would listen and when appropriate, I would ask questions. I believe that too often, people are kept in a little bubble. They only want to talk about their views, and they do not want to learn or understand other peoples’ views. I think it stems from how people grow up and I think that is unfortunate. In the article Political Socialization and the Making of Citizens, it is discussed by the authors that political socialization of a child will occur two ways. The first way to have political socialization as a child is to have parents who are very active. By having parents who actively engage in politics, children are exposed to political discussions (Neundorf and Smets, 2017). The second way children experience political socialization is through socioeconomic status. It has been studied that children who come from a higher socioeconomic status are more likely to engage in political discussion because their parents have a higher level of education to provide them with information (Neundorf and Smets, 2017). I can understand where this statement is coming from. However, my parents only have a high school diploma and I think that because of their lack of higher education I took an interest into politics.
