Sample Reflecting back on the Community Health Nursing course this semester I have learned how socioeconomic status and health can affect a community. I have also learned how important of an impact local and state government also affect the community. Homelessness is a significant issue nationally. In the emergency department we have frequent homeless patients. As an emergency room nurse it is important to perform in depth socioeconomic assessment to better assist our patients. I have learned that it is also important to be aware of the diseases, illnesses and cultures in the community. It is also an eye opener for the need for nurses in the community. Public health is emerging and public health nursing responsibilities have expanded but there is a decline in trained community and public health nurses (Thill, 2019). I was unaware of all the responsibilities of a community health nurse. As a nurse I feel more educated on issues that can arise in communities with higher or lower socioeconomic status and how important assessment is. The CDC also assist public and community health nursing with services including opioid rapid response, CASPER, ACE,HHE…etc (CDC,2019).
