The purpose of this assignment is to provide the student with the opportunity to analyze two divergent opinions (i.e., the pro and con) related to a topic in substance abuse. The student should attempt to “debate” the issue in a scholarly, objective manner by providing documentation for each pro and con argument using evidence-based literature. In the conclusion of the paper, state your opinion. Identify a topical issue related to substance abuse that you may have heard discussed that invokes a variety of opinions. Examples: clean needle exchange, legalization of marijuana, efficacy of the “War on Drugs”, drug treatment for incarcerated individuals, or other similar controversial issue. Clearly state the topic you are “debating”. Clearly identify three points for the “pro” and three points for the “con” side of the issue. Use evidence-based literature to document both sides of the issue.. Support each argument with a primary source citation. Avoid quotations in this brief paper. In the conclusion, state which side of the argument you support and why. You may use the 1st person in the conclusion of this paper, but try to avoid it. The minimum word count is 600 words – EXCLUDING the title page and reference list. Must write in MS word. Set the computer defaults to Times New Roman – 12 point font. Must follow correct APA format using APA 6th edition. Must use a minimum of 3 current (<5 years) peer reviewed references.
