Prepare a Word document in MLA format. Respond in full to each question below after you have read the article and watched the youtube video linked above. Please do not write the questions, only your responses. Number your document. Submit your finished document by clicking the title of this assignment “Homework – due Sept. 13th”, browsing for and attaching your document, and clicking “Submit”.
1. Explain the following allusion to another author made by Grose: “egalitarian marriage starts looking more like the backdrop to an Updike short story.” What does this reference mean in the context of Grose’s discussion? (if you don’t know who John Updike is or what he wrote about, you need to Google it and find out — this is part of what’s required to answer this question adequately).
2. What is “second shift” work? Who popularized this term?
3. What logos can you identify at work in this article? Give at least one concrete example from the text.
4. Discuss the lead strategy used at the beginning of this essay that not only draws us in but also builds ethos. Why might we consider Grose a reliable source on this topic based on the information she reveals early in the essay?
5. Give one example of a transition/topic sentence used in this essay to segue into a new discussion point.
6. Grose acknowledges the opposition several times in her essay (gives men, the opposition, credit for doing some things)…what are they? Name at least 2 examples. In what ways does this make her essay appeal to a wider audience?
7. What social context affects your interpretation of the ideas presented in this essay? (What personal factors about you and your sex, class, background, make you more or less likely to accept Grose’s argument? If you aren’t sure what social context means, review the Week 2 Notes PowerPoint).
8. Pretend you have been handed a research assignment on “Gender Ideologies as they relate to division of responsibilities in the household” by your Sociology professor. Grose’s essay is the first source you’ve come across in the process of your research. What next steps would you take?
PART 2 – DISCUSSION BOARD POST
Find another article online that relates to this topic of gender roles / housework (it may either agree or disagree with Jessica Grose). The idea here is that you would not want to limit the scope of your research to the ideas of only one author — if you were given the task of researching about gender ideologies as it relates to housework, you’d want to get several different opinions on the topic before situating your own voice somewhere in the conversation. You are looking for another article that you think presents a great argument about this topic.
Perhaps you want to search for a more current essay or report to compare with Grose’s essay written in 2013. Or, perhaps you want to find something that challenges the data presented by Grose. Or, perhaps you want to find an additional article that reiterates Grose’s thesis. What direction you take is up to you. Read and annotate the new article to ensure you have a good grasp of the main idea (be able to summarize it). Then search the article for a few quotes that might be relevant to your discussion on this topic.
For the post: Click on the discussion board link in your left-hand menu. Find your group and click on it. Then, click on the thread titled “Research for Imaginary Sociology Assignment – due Sept. 13th”. Hit “Reply” to type your post. *Please do not use any articles already in use by your classmates — you should each use a unique article*
Your post should include:
1) Provide a summary of the article and explain how it would contribute to your research of this topic. What has it contributed or how has it served to impact or change your feelings about the topic after reading only Grose’s article?
2) Indicate one or more direct quotes from the source that would be useful to your discussion on this topic (what quotes might you use for support in your own argument essay on this topic?).
3) Provide the Works Cited entry for this source. (List the full bibliographic info needed to cite this source on your Works Cited page). If you don’t know how to do this, please consult the Purdue Owl Online Writing Lab for help with formatting web sources on your Works Cited page here. A sample post is available for you in the discussion board.
4) Comment on at least two other posts from your group by either:
- Asking a question about their article
- Making a thematic connection between their article and your own article
- Discussing a connection between their article and Grose’s original article
- Discussing the ways their article might fit into a broader discussion of this topic for a research paper
