Adequate healthcare means that people’s needs, irrespective of their abilities, are being met, and their health is not at risk. The most common barriers to care include a lack of access to specialists, insurance providers who do not provide adequate coverage for associated services, an inappropriate environment for receiving care, and communication issues.
The first step in advancing access to healthcare, especially for the disabled, is understanding their needs. Careful consideration of each patient’s unique needs is essential to prevent adverse outcomes, including inadequate pain management or infection risk (Hall et al., 2019). A multidisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, and rehabilitation professionals can advise on a treatment plan that facilitates thoroughly enjoying and meeting the needs of people with disabilities.
Another step in advancing access to healthcare or ensuring adequate healthcare to all is by providing transport to health services. This ensures that even the disabled can easily access health facilities and services. Another initiative to ease access to healthcare is the installation of lifts in all public buildings. These recommendations make disabled people feel appreciated and not discriminated against.
Moreover, adequate healthcare for all can be achieved by ensuring that health institutions have particular doctors or special services for disabled people. These Doctors understand disability patients and are willing to accept more patients. Most disabled people do not get quality health care because some doctors are naive about their disabilities (Hall et al., 2019). Having specialists for different kinds of disabilities can be a good solution. Insurance providers should provide adequate support to healthcare by varying their coverage for disabled people. Disabled people are often not compensated for their disabilities.
In conclusion, adequate healthcare is a problem that needs urgent solutions. We will have a healthier community when everyone accesses excellent and quality healthcare. Changes are happening, and many organizations are working on this issue, but many stigmas and discrimination still need to be addressed.

Reading this article and hearing more about the disparities in care for people with disabilities, in a way infuriated me and made me think about the patients I have treated while in dental hygiene school and at my current practice who have disabilities, either having to use a wheelchair, developing blindness or being born with intellectual and motor disabilities. I have seen it true that many of our pediatric patients and parents do not wish to see services at an “‘adult” or general dental practice for fear of how they might be mistreated or turned down. I always connect these situations to if this was me, my child, or my mother, how would I want them to be treated.
There are internal issues with the healthcare system that need to be addressed in order to ensure adequate healthcare for all. In the article, the doctors generally spoke about why they did not want to treat patients with disabilities, not because they personally did not want to, but because there were factors that did not play into their favor. How healthcare settings are run does not always allow time and resources for additional and specialized care- like requiring an ASL interpreter, taking additional time to transfer the patient from a wheelchair to an examination bed, or having a working elevator or ramp for a person in a wheelchair. Collaboration and coordination with healthcare providers and care teams are also necessary to provide quality and adequate care- which includes continuous improvement in education about disabilities and treating patients with certain conditions.
There should be regulations and new system changes that take place to continuously aim to improve care for patients with all types of needs and conditions. There is such a wide range of what can be classified as disabilities, and many times disabilities can not be physically seen unless a patient opens up about their medical history and conditions. I liked the idea of incorporating disabilities and special requests in data health care systems collect about the patient. Patients should feel comfortable expressing their needs and advocating for themselves, but the system should be open and willing to listen and help. Small changes, like making doorways bigger, installing a ramp, or having an ASL interpreter available through Zoom or Skype can make a patient feel just that much better about the care they are provided.
