This week we learned about an important concept, cultural awareness. We learned that cultural awareness “involves not simply knowing something of the nature of culture, or learning about the culture of others. It involves developing a deep and critical awareness of our own cultural selves and our position in relation to issues such as cultural imperialism and racism (Jones, eta l., 2018)”.

Well, how do we apply such knowledge to our real life? We begin our practice by analyzing someone else’s experience. For this week’s discussion, Please offer your insights on Vidya Vox’s story by identifying and analyzing a critical incident in her journey moving from India to the US. Vidya Iyer, better known by her stage name Vidya Vox, is an American YouTuber and singer. She was born in Chennai and immigrated with her family to the United States of America at the age of eight. You will situate your discussion of Vidya’s experience within the critical reflections steps introduced in our textbook, Intercultural Learning, which involves five steps: Describe, Interpret, Verify, Explain and Reconstruct (DIVER).

Objectives

1. You will improve your skill with analytical writing, which leads to clear, organized emails you write at work, and facilitate with productive conversation you have with your team, your family members and relational partners. Please be specific with your description of examples and through proper citation, demonstrate your use of disciplinary specific language as much as possible.

2. Successful completion of this assignment demonstrates your learning of the course outcome, identify and critically analyze one’s own cultural identities and worldview in relation to intercultural interactions.

Tasks

1. Understanding the case

Please first learn about Vidya Vox’s experience from the following 360 video, The Female Planet: The Vidya Vox Story:

This video can be viewed from your computer screen (you can hover your mouse inside the video frame to “look around” within the story), or for more immersive virtual reality experience, viewed within a Google Cardboard, or a virtual reality headset such as Oculus.

To get the most of the 360 viewing experience, make sure to move your cursor from left to right, or up and down, to get a sense of immersive viewing experience. Pay attention to various examples Vidya mentioned that you could use later as a critical incident for your analysis.

For some understanding of Vidya Vox’s musical career, you can sample her work: Be Free (Lyrical Video). Consider her use of traditional Indian dance and Indian music in her music and how that resonated with her personal journey narrated in the previous video, Vidya Vox Story.

2.Writing up discussion posting

1 Describe: start an active listening process as if you are friend of Vidya Vox. As you go through the video, The Female Planet: The Vidya Vox Story, what can be one critical incident you can identify and describe?

[Hint: according to our textbook, Intercultural Learning(Jones, et al., 2018), a critical incident is one that “disrupted or made you re-think your assumptions” (p. 26), or one that doesn’t align with a theory/concept you learn from the class. In Vidya Vox’s journey, what might be a critical incident that made you re-think your assumptions of the culture and/or group Vidya Vox represents? This could be Indian culture, where Vidya Vox was born within and grew up with inside of her home; or American culture, where Vidya Vox grew up with outside of her home; or musician group she identify with professionally; or second-generation immigrants who seek meaningful conversation between two cultures; or any other culture and/or group you see as fit. ]

2 Interpret: can you provide at least two version of interpretation for the critical incident you identified?

[Hint: When we ask the question of “why” in a critical incident, we are providing interpretation for that incident. Why she did what she did on the spot? Why other people were doing this to her? What was the outcome and immediate impact? For instance, Vidya Fox remember her mother escaping with them from an abusive relationship with Vidya’s father. One way to interpret this could be attributing the cause of abusive relationship to Vidya’s father’s personality. A second version of interpretation could be attributing this to the gender identity and social expectation particular to the region Vidya is coming from. Once you clearly lay out at least two versions of interpretation, you are ready to verify them.]

3 Verify: Test your interpretations by consulting someone familiar with the cultural norm, value or worldviews relevant to the critical incident; you can also find resources (news articles, news interview clips, academic research, government report etc.) that can be your source of verification. Your reference can either confirm or reject your interpretations.

[Hint: For instance, the ebook chapter link, “Falling from the Tree: Family, Gender, and Generational Differences”, from the book, Roots and Reflections: South Asians in the Pacific Northwest, since so many of us are curious about gender, power and social relationships in India. can be one useful source supporting our “verifying” process. Please feel free to use it. It is free via Bellevue College library- https://ezproxy.bellevuecollege.edu/login?url=https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=nlebk&AN=544104&site=ehost-live&ebv=EB&ppid=pp_139] (Links to an external site.)

4 Explain: After your verification, you can explain your new understanding of incident, by connecting your interpretation with theories and concepts that you have explored in this course. What words have you used and what do these indicate about your perspective of the experience? What assumptions have you noticed in your original description and where might they have come from? What does your description reveal about your values, beliefs or awareness of power? What does this tell you about your cultural-self and others’ cultural practices?

[Hint: this is the most critical step and please make sure to cite the theories and concepts you plan to reference here. Please make sure to be as thorough and convincing in your explanation.]

5. Reconstruct: Looking back at the steps, what does this reflection mean for yourself and your future intercultural communication experience? what new understandings about yourself and others might you share at the end of this reflection?

For this discussion posting we no longer provide sample postings. Make good use of the “hint” interwoven into the writing prompt here and good luck!
