The organization is a union of 29 members, mainly in Europe and North America. NATO’s main mission is to protect the freedom of its members. The main purposes of NATO during the Cold War were to deter aggression and attempts at coercion, to defend the allies in the event of aggression, and to assure the balance of forces (Yost, 2010). Since the Cold War, NATO kept the original purposes as well as taking on additional roles. Security, consultation, deterrence and defense, crisis management, and partnership are also strategies uses by NATO to remain a strong defense mechanism for its members (Yost, 2010).Treaties have been around longer than many other international political organizations. They are typically used to create security alliances and defense mechanisms between countries. Coordinating it’s members to work together on global issues, while allowing them to maintain state sovereignty, is a monumental task. State sovereignty is the concept that each country (state) is in complete control of the citizens and property within it’s own territory. Enforcing international laws and treaties, while not impeding on a countries’ own government, is a difficult task. This can be seen in the area of human rights. These issues can involve poverty, migrations, and freedom of expression in addition to discrimination and abuse.One area of human rights that I think the U.N. could be helpful in rectifying is with human trafficking. The U.N. attempts to do this by helping states to draft laws, create anti-trafficing strategies and assist with financial resources. They can also help with cross- border participation. In countries that human rights are not protected, the U.N. can impose sanctions and other forms of punishment, in an effort to get them to cooperate and comply.
