The First World War was — in many ways — as transformational (if not more so) than the French Revolution of just over 125 years before. It upended the European order, it toppled regimes and created an entirely new European map. It laid the foundations for a second, larger and more destructive conflict that would kick off just over twenty years later. It sparked a cultural revolution across Europe, as well as helped to spur social movements with an urgency that they had not seen in the past half century. The First World War broke the psyche of Europe, and unleashed a Pandora’s Box of change across the continent. For our purposes, we should keep two things in mind: the first is the long lasting effects of this war. I am not being hyperbolic in claiming that the First World War broke the psyche of Europe. If look at the veterans of the war and what they did after, men like Hitler, Mussolini, Josef Stalin, Josip Tito, Hermann Goring, and many many more, we see a list of leaders who would take the lessons of the First World War and use them to their own political and military ends. The War set the stage for arch nationalists and totalitarian governments to come to power in its wake. But, at the same time, we should consider the First World War on its own terms: it was a conflict that saw no parallel to any war that had come before in European history. The horrors of trench warfare were the horrors of industrialized warfare writ large. New technologies created new and better ways to kill humans, and the belligerents in the war gleefully used poison gas, large caliber artillery, machine guns, and dozens of other inventions to destroy as many lives of opposing soldiers as possible. This war — as I think the art of it shows — really shifted how Europeans viewed international conflict.
