Memorandum

 

Proposal, due November 7, 2021

 

We will be writing unsolicited proposals that are relatively short and informal, so the topic you choose should be one you can write about easily from your personal experience.

 

Important: Since you are proposing a solution to a problem or an improvement of some kind, you should be in a position to carry out the proposed action, i.e. you are already a part of the organization, are available for consultation, know helpful contacts, or have some other personal connection.

Do not write about a solution or improvement that has already been proposed and carried out!

 

Here are some topics and tips to help you with your proposal:

 

Sample Topics –

 

· an improvement to a procedure at work – maybe suggesting different operating hours for the computer lab you work in or a more efficient way to track sales within the store in which you work

· a safety issue you have noticed at school, work, or in the community – make sure the solution you propose is practical and affordable

· an activity/event you would like to sponsor for your fraternity/sorority or other club – remember to explain how this would be beneficial to the group and worth the cost involved

· a fundraising idea for an organization of which you are a member

· a new class you would like to teach at the Colvin Center or a new intramural sport you would like to organize

· an improvement at your place of residence

· any idea to improve activities on the OSU campus such as Homecoming

 

Format –

 

· Decide who to address your proposal to – a specific person or group (you may use a fake name if you prefer, but the situation should be a real one).

· Decide on the appropriate medium – e.g. a memo if you are an employee within the company, or a letter if you are outside the organization, or maybe even an e-mail if that is preferred by your audience.

· Define the need clearly, and work out the details of your plan.

· Think of the concerns of your audience and what type of appeal will be most persuasive.

 

Content –

 

1. Start with a statement of purpose – what you intend to propose that your audience needs.

2. Explain the background and identify the need.

3. Describe your plan — what it involves, what it costs, how long it will take.

4. Explain the benefits of this proposed action.

5. Assure your audience that you are qualified to follow through.

6. Close with a persuasive appeal and request a response.

 

During week 12, we will work on the peer review of this major assignment.

Evaluation Criteria –

 

· An electronic copy of only the final draft of your message should be submitted to Canvas under Major Assignments – Proposal by 11:59 PM on November 7, 2021

· Remember that a proposal is a highly persuasive document.

· Grades will be based on the criteria listed in the Scoring Rubric.
