Nursing and Counseling Theories
Implementation of nursing theory and counseling theory serves as a foundation/framework in managing patients in both individual and group therapies. Nursing and counseling theories guide the new psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) to build and develop practice skills.
Jean Watson is a nurse theorist who developed the theory of human caring. Watson’s philosophy focuses on the interconnection between the patient and the nurse; and how they express care to their patients. The theory of Human Caring expresses concerns on how the care of the patients progresses to promote health and wellness, prevent illness, and restores health. The theory of Human Caring portrays the tender, lenient aspect of nursing combining with both adequate knowledge of science and nursing practice. Jean Watson’s theory of Human Caring solidifies the aspect of nursing foundation practice that supports the comprehensive, integrated nursing care of a patient. Jean Watson’s theory has some rudimentary fundamentals guiding the core principles and ethics of nursing practice to include practicing nursing with love, tenderness, benevolence, unselfishness, authenticity, trustworthiness, accuracy, safety, humanity to protect human dignity and establishing inner tranquility and consistency (Thompson, 2017).
Jean Watson’s theory of human caring believes nursing care is a calling that is extensive, considerable, holistic, all-inclusive, and very thorough (Thompson, 2017). The theory implies that caring for the patient involves caring for the family, the environment, and the self. The theory encourages patients to utilize evidence-based science in decision-making, express, and welcome negative and positive feelings, instill hope/faith within the self, and develop a helping-trust relationship (Gonzalo, 2019). The Watson’s Theory of Human Caring provides a holistic framework to support all aspects of the patient’s needs.
Counseling Theories
Therapists utilize cognitive therapy during a counseling session because it focuses on how one’s thoughts can influence their behaviors and emotions. Cognitive therapy is a therapeutic tool utilize in problem-solving. It helps the client create insight into the current problem, altered perception, and communication process (Wheeler, 2014). Cognitive therapy helps the client to develop positive coping strategies to overcome the current challenges. Due to its versatile advantages, psychotherapists employ this therapeutic tool in varieties of mental health conditions, including substance abuse, anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, personality disorders, and eating disorders (Northwestern/The Family Institute, 2015).
The PMHNP utilizing the Watson’s Theory of Human Caring and cognitive therapy, provides holistic care to the client, thereby supporting/stabilizing emotional, spiritual, and physical needs to allow the client to improve on their behaviors, overcoming their challenges. Watson’s theory helps to preserve dignity (Thompson, 2017). Cognitive-behavioral therapy entrusts the client to acquire skills that empower the client to cultivate positive attributes like greatness, prestige, respectability, decency, self-confidence, and self-esteem in conducting their behaviors (Northwestern/The Family Institute, 2015). The Combination of the two theories unifies harmoniously in ensuring the acquisition of positive outcomes.

Three Practicum Objectives
· Able to establish communication skills paying particular attention to psychosocial issues in engaging with individuals and families.
· Exhibit capability, competence, and skills to prioritize concerns, dilemmas, and problems the client will present during a session.
· Provide evidence-based rationale for decisions.
Three Practicum Goals.
· To gain the necessary skills and knowledge required to establish detailed and accurate differential diagnoses.
· According to individual needs, utilizing evidence-based practice to devise and initiate suitable treatment plans to develop a trusting rapport for long-term relationships.
· Will stand in the gap for patients and families (advocating) in providing culturally competent, ethical, cost-effective, and quality care in various healthcare settings.
Producing a Timeline of Practicum Activities
· My goals and objectives are to meet and accomplish the eleven weeks of the group therapy practicum commencement. Adequate time management is essential in establishing this goal.
· To meet the clinical hours expected by the school, one will attend practicum sessions twice weekly, eight hours each day, that will yield a total of 160 hours by week tenth of the semester/quarter.
· Also, acquiring knowledge in the practicum is essential in fulfilling the course requirement.
